Makam Raja Imogiri (Imogiri Royal Cemetery) Pilgrimage

Why Visit?

Makam Raja Imogiri is the sacred resting place of Mataram Kingdom’s royal family, built in the 17th century. This spiritual site offers a deep cultural and historical experience, where visitors can learn about Javanese royal traditions and pay respects to the ancestors of Yogyakarta and Surakarta’s sultans.

What to Do?

  • Climb the hundreds of stone steps leading to the cemetery.
  • Wear traditional Javanese attire (provided on-site) before entering.
  • Learn about Javanese burial rituals and royal history.
  • Experience the peaceful and mystical atmosphere of the sacred site.

Getting There

Located in Imogiri, Bantul, about 40 minutes from Yogyakarta. Visitors must climb 300+ steps to reach the main site.

Tips for Visitors

✅ Wear modest clothing (kain batik & traditional attire required).
✅ Bring water & be prepared for the climb.
✅ Avoid visiting during Friday prayers as it gets crowded.
